Happy New Year my dear friends,
I hope you had a great holiday season!
If you’re like me, the holidays were great…but you’re ready to get back to business-as-usual, am I right?
As I’ve been reflecting upon this past year and dreaming of what lies in the year ahead, Creating the Life You Want has been at the forefront of my thoughts.
It’s true that our potential is truly unlimited and so this one question always confounds me:
If our potential is so vast, why is it that we don’t maximize it?
This puzzles me because if we have so much power over our own destiny why would we do that to ourselves? Why would we stand in the way of our own personal growth?
Marianne Williamson says it best:
When I think about being powerful beyond measure it kind of does scare me a little.
Fear of success is that actually a thing?!
But when I really think about it what scares me even more is that I have all this untapped potential that’s going to waste if I don’t do something to bring it out.
Life has lots of challenges. (I’ve definitely had my share of them!)
Do you ever feel like every time you take one step forward you get pushed three steps backwards?
You may feel like your dream life is unattainable no matter how hard you try.
But what if you were to take those daily trials and use them to your advantage?
After all, you know what they say about challenges…they bring out the best in us.
Easier said than done?
So how can you overcome challenges and create the life you want?
Here are 12 simple tips that can help you create the life you yearn for despite life’s daily challenges.
Now I’m not talking about being rich and famous here, no, I’m talking about something so much more valuable.
I’m talking about how you can create peace, happiness, rest, contentment; the kind of life that money can’t buy.
Let’s start with this:
#1 Positive Intent
Give others the benefit of positive intent.
In almost all situations, people you’re dealing with don’t set out to upset you, or ruin your day, or try to do you harm.
If you’re familiar with emotional intelligence (EI) you know that when you assume that others around you are acting with positive intent, you won’t be so quick to react when things go wrong.
This type of thinking helps you hit the pause button and take a step back to think about things before you respond.
This one tip alone can change your day-to-day experiences more than you can even imagine.
As a matter of fact, it’s almost magical!
It’s hard to get upset at anyone when you look past the surface and see deeper into their heart.
#2 Take Idea Notes
Write down any and all ideas you get the second they pop into your head.
How many times have you thought of a great idea just to forget it five minutes later?
Writing your ideas down immediately has a couple of advantages.
First and most importantly you won’t forget them.
Second, putting them down on paper helps you sort through your thoughts at the right time. You can look at your notes and think about the ideas whenever you want, not just at the moment you get the idea.
I’ve tried using my phone to track my ideas, but for me a small notebook I can take everywhere I go works best.
You’ll have to figure out what works best for you but whatever method you choose, just remember to grab your ideas before they slip away.
#3 Act On Your Ideas
What good does it do to have a great idea if you do nothing about it?
You don’t have to act on every single idea you write down, but try to review your notes often, maybe daily, or weekly, and choose the ideas that really scream out at you to act on.
Your thoughts can be life changing if you pay attention to them.
Marie Forleo provides us with a mental exercise that can help us turn our wishes into reality. In her exercise, you just take the phrase, “Wouldn’t it be great if…” and you finish the sentence.
Using this brainstorming technique is an easy way to put your ideas into action.
#4 Quiet Time
You need to set aside time each day to renew your spirit.
- Stare at the sky
- Take a walk in the park
Do whatever it is you can do to push the noise of the world aside for a few minutes and hear the voices within your heart and soul.
It’s really hard to know where to concentrate your efforts if you don’t have the opportunity to think about what’s most important on a regular basis.
#5 Take Thoughtful Risks
Without taking risks you can’t expect things to change, but you don’t want to take foolish risks.
There are many benefits to taking risks as long as you’ve done your research and aren’t acting impulsively.
Some of the benefits include greater self-confidence, learning new skills, discovery of new opportunities, and greater rewards.
You can read more on the benefits of taking risks in this article by Donal Daly on LinkedIn. It’s very inspiring!
One of the greatest things about being willing to take risks in my opinion is how it changes your complete mentality.
I recently read on Huffington Post that once you have become accustomed to taking risks you break free from the average way of living and thinking.
I had never really looked at risk taking in this way before but if you think about it, most people like to play it safe.
Playing it safe is fine, but again, if you don’t take a risk you can be selling yourself short.
Don’t be average, be extraordinary!
#6 Take Care Of Yourself
You’ve heard this one over and over again.
Why? Because it’s one of the most critical things you can do to keep yourself going strong.
Taking care of yourself can mean many things.
To me it means, eating healthy, exercising, getting proper rest, thinking positively, spending time with loved ones, and doing things that make me feel like I’m accomplishing something.
Make sure to take time out for yourself even if you have to schedule it in!
#7 Do Good Things
Look for ways to help others.
Not only does giving back feel good, it’s a great way to expand your network and learn new things.
You never know what opportunities will come up.
Doing good is always win-win, it can even help lower your blood pressure.
If you want to read more about the benefits of serving others you can go to MentalFloss.com for a great list of 7 scientific benefits of service.
#8 Create To-Do Lists
This is a tried and true tactic for accomplishing things.
Making a To-Do list will keep you on track and remind you of your successes.
It also frees up your mind from trying to remember every little thing that needs to get done so you can focus on other things.
And doesn’t it always feel good to check things off? Oh yeah!!!!
(I’m working on a post on prioritizing your To-Do list to achieve the things you really want to get done. Keep an eye out for it!)
#9 Develop Success Habits
Habits make all the difference.
To develop success habits you need to learn about what successful people do and follow their lead.
Do they wake up early? go to bed early? meditate? have mentors? mentor others? Take risks? Exercise daily?
How can you know what successful people do?
Talk to successful people, read books about them, listen to Podcasts, research on internet. Then, work to develop similar habits!
Why reinvent the wheel when there are so many easily accessible examples surrounding us?!
To learn more about how to form habits you can read my former post The Power of A Routine .
I also highly recommend reading The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg.
You’ll learn how to form new habits and why habits are crucial to your success.
#10 Believe In Yourself
If you don’t believe in yourself no one can do it for you.
They can tell you they believe in you.
They can cheer you on.
They can even tell you to believe in yourself (like I am here).
But the bottom line is that ultimately you’re the only person who can give yourself the confidence to fly!
How do you do this?
It’s all about positive self-talk here.
Cut the negative self-talk!
It’s not good for anything. No good ever comes from negative self-talk.
Even if you aren’t good at something you don’t have to remind yourself over and over again. Just focus on positive things that you can do.
It’s the self-fulfillment prophecy, if you tell yourself something long enough you eventually realize it.
And this works in both directions. If you tell yourself negative things you’ll eventually realize those negative things.
On the flip side, if you repeatedly tell yourself positive things you’ll realize those things.
You have the power to choose your thoughts.
Choose wisely because thoughts turn into action!
#11 Work Hard
After all else, success takes hard work.
As you commit and work towards your goals, you will start seeing rewards little by little.
The harder you work, the greater the results.
My son-in-law has been working around the clock to build his dream business in Tunisia.
He’s worked tirelessly for years and is finally beginning to see the fruits of his labors.
This week his spring water company, Pristine, begins production! We are all so proud of him!
Imagine, if he didn’t take a risk, believe in himself and work hard towards his goal, he wouldn’t be celebrating the launch of his new business.
He could have easily been relaxing over the past few years. It’s not like starting his own business was something he had to do.
He has a great job and a very good life already, BUT he has a bigger vision of what his dream life looks like and is doing all he can to make that dream come true.
#12 Have Fun
Ever heard you should do what you love and love what you do?
We hear it all the time.
Why is this important? Is work or achieving goals really supposed to be fun?
It doesn’t have to be, but when you enjoy what you’re doing or have a passion for it, the greater the chances of you sticking with it will be.
So no matter what you do, incorporate some fun!
For me, this means loosening up a little and not worrying so much about what everyone else thinks. (Like posting this pic even though I feel like it’s ridiculous! But who cares right?!)
Let’s enjoy the journey folks!!
These 12 tips are really simple things you can do to change your every day life for the better.
Out of simple things come great things!
If you can implement any of these into your day-to-day routine you’ll quickly see positive changes.
You may not get rich and famous (at least not right away hahaha!) but you will find that your life is more peaceful, less stressful and full of joy.
Full of the kind of happiness that only you can bring into your life.
