“The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential… these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence.” – Confucius
There is a reason why personal development is a $10 billion per year industry in the United States alone. Even Confucius knew the value of self-improvement.
As a matter of fact, he provided us with the secret to unleashing our potential to achieve personal excellence.
There are many different ways to achieve success but Confucius focused on the 3 key traits that success is always built upon.
3 Key Traits to Achieve Personal Excellence
Key #1 Will to win.
Only YOU can control what you become but to be successful you need a will to win.
A will to win what?
I’m not a competitive person so if someone challenges me it’s not very motivating. However, I do have a desire to be the best person I can be.
This desire gives me the will to win at the game of life.
This gives me the drive to try to become a better person each day; to learn something new; to share what I learn with others; to bring joy to those around me.
This will to win is very important. Without it, there is no way to progress.
Key #2 Desire to succeed.
Another key trait that is needed to achieve personal excellence is the desire to succeed.
What is the difference between will and desire?
“According to Nietzsche, will is that which appoints to desire its way. We desire many things, and many of them are contradictory to other desires. The will decides which desires we will actualize, and which we will suppress.” – Justin Richards on www.Quora.com.
This is spot on!
You may desire to lose weight, but you may also desire to eat a cookie. You may desire to exercise but you may also desire to sit on the couch and blog. (not that I would skip a workout to blog right?! hahaha)
So our desires can definitely be contradictory.
Then how do we choose? That’s where ‘will’ comes into the picture.
Desire to succeed leads us to the will to win.
Key #3 Urge to reach your full potential.
If you don’t have the urge to continually improve your life you will never reach your full potential.
Urge pushes you in a direction. So once you have the desire, then use your will to choose which desire to follow, you need the urge to keep pushing you forward.
I may not be a world-famous philosopher, but for me, it makes sense to reorder these keys:
- Desire to succeed.
- Will to win.
- Urge to reach your full potential.
Regardless of what order you put these in, each one is a key trait to help you develop personal excellence.
Confucius didn’t say you would develop excellence above all others.
He specifically said “personal” excellence and for each person that will mean something different.
Work to develop these key traits and you will unleash potential within you that you didn’t even realize was there.
Unlock your personal excellence!
